17/01/2018 HiPEAC blog: 'My family has traditionally practised law, and I have continued that tradition by studying the laws of the universe' - Maria Girone, CERN openlab

Experiments undertaken at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, generate vertiginous amounts of data. At the HiPEAC conference in January 2018, CERN openlab Chief Technology Officer Maria Girone will give a keynote talk on the computing challenges behind this incredible tool for scientific research. In this interview, Maria sets out some of these challenges and gives us a glimpse into the future of high-energy physics research at CERN.

16/01/2018 CERN Openlab Summer Students Internship in Switzerland, 2018

Applications are invited for two months CERN summer student programme to work on advanced IT projects. Applicants must be a Bachelor or Master student in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Physics (with a strong computing profile).

During two full months corresponding to nine weeks (June-August 2018), the CERN openlab summer students will be given a series of IT lectures especially prepared for them by experts at CERN and other institutes. A report on the work project carried out is to be handed in at the end of the stay. The application deadline is February 19, 2018.

16/01/2018 HiPEAC18 provides the expertise needed to advance computing in the face of crisis

• Manchester is this year’s setting for Europe’s largest computing research conference, which takes place from 22-24 January
• As the world reels from the exposure of major chip-level security flaws, HiPEAC’s community of experts is more essential than ever
• Three keynote talks, 27 workshops, eight tutorials and 33 papers over the three-day conference will cover everything from machine learning to secure critical real-time systems

15/01/2018 HiPEAC Conference Seeks to Advance Computing in Face of Crisis

GHENT, Belgium, Jan. 15, 2018 — From 22-24 January in Manchester, the HiPEAC conference will once again bring together the best minds in computer architecture and compilation to exploit the enormous potential of new computing paradigms while minimizing the very real risks. At a time of global crisis in computing systems, with chip-level security flaws exposing the vulnerability of our ever-more connected society and the end of Moore’s Law threatening to slow the progress brought about by faster, cheaper, more powerful processing, HiPEAC’s network of experts will once again showcase their solutions for everything from machine learning to secure critical real-time systems.
